This project sought to transform an underutilized backyard into a functional and accessible outdoor living space. The existing multilevel deck was not ADA-compliant. Inside the house, the kitchen and family room were on different levels, and the deck layout did not align with the accessibility needs. The goal was to design an inclusive, accessible space with flexible outdoor living areas that prioritized the homeowner’s goals, offering an inviting environment for a large family to relax, dine, and entertain.
Carefully planned ramps were integrated into the layout of the two-level outdoor space, ensuring smooth transitions between the kitchen and family room, allowing seamless movement for walkers and wheelchairs. Safety was also a priority, so the design includes gates and guardrails that help keep pets and young children safe while offering peace of mind to the homeowners.
A prefabricated pergola with a pivoting louvered system was chosen to provide both shade and natural air ventilation, custom-designed to meet our client’s specific needs. We selected a sophisticated monotone color palette to ensure the pergola seamlessly integrates with the overall aesthetic of the deck and house. IPE decking was chosen for its low-maintenance and naturally rot-resistant properties, complemented by an aluminum cable railing system designed to maximize the views.
The multi-bay screened-in porch offers a dedicated grilling area, dining space for eight, and ample lounge seating to accommodate a large family, making the outdoor area an extension of the living spaces in the home. The outdoor space is designed for year-round enjoyment with integrated lighting, electronic screens, heaters, and ceiling fans. This multifunctional area enhances their connection to nature while prioritizing comfort, accessibility, and safety.
